500 Year Vision

Experiments with sustainable technology in South Bohemia, Czech Republic. A British couple renovating a country house & thinking about our environment.

day one

July3

It’s 8 am on Monday 3rd July. I’m sitting staring at my computer screen thinking ‘what the hell do I do now’. It’s been quite a week.

An explanation of the names – the strategy behind the brand names is that both bog and gob have negative connotations and no FMCG would touch them with a barge pole. They’d put them out to market research and people would go ‘eww – no’. Therefore, when I create these brands and link the names with very positive brand values and organisational values, I will be creating positive connotations from a base level of zero. Think Egg & Virgin, both seemingly unusual choices of words for a brand to start with. Bog is going to come to mean really clever ways of using and processing water.

I woke up early on Sunday morning thinking about bog. After reading Sandra Laville’s article on Martine Wright – who was in the Aldgate bombing last year I realised that I really, really needed Martine to come and work for me – not go off to south africa to train to be a pilot! And the article said that she was packing to go right now. I was in London staying with a friend with no Internet access, so I phoned James the journalist & asked if he could track Martine down for me. He came up with a couple of great ideas so I was on the phone straight away to the 7/7 victim support team. They were surprisingly accommodating seeing as I just phoned them on a Sunday morning out of the blue, but couldn’t do anything for me until today.

Just phoned the guardian newsdesk to try to get hold of Sandra Laville, she wrote the article so is bound to be in contact with Martine. I guess it’s a bit early for journalists! So, what would I say when I get through?

I urgently need to get hold of Martine Wright. I need to stop her going to South Africa and get her to come and work with me in Birmingham, (for free?). It’s really important. I need her to help me combat climate change and increase accessibility through DDA legislation. Can you help me get hold of her before she leaves?

It’s 8.30 and still noone answering at the Guardian. Maybe I should write that other patent application now?

8.40 just spoken to Jamie Wilson on the Guardian newsdesk who commented that it was very unlikely that I’d stop Martine going to south africa seeing it’s been her life time ambition. He couldn’t contact Sandra Laville for me for personal reasons. I do have an email address now so I’ll try that.

Now 9.30, I’ve started the patent application, emailed Sandra Laville, fed the cats, watered the tomatoes and sent Mike to work. I need to email him to remind him to register bogblog.org – the other bogblogs are registered to the odd looking bogdog in America. Also, I came up with a new company name yesterday – 500 year vision, instead of Osiris Vision. Osiris Vision is difficult for people to write down when they hear it for the first time. Also 500 year vision is a good way of promoting my 500 year plan idea. I’d not though about it for ages, but was talking to a couple of guys at the enviro entrepreneur school on Wednesday night, and it reminded me.

Maybe I should contact Michelle Brand & Princess re designs for gob?

ACTION – today need to email Simon Webb to pass on details of bog to Briony (not sure of spelling?).

It’s been quite an amazing week. I need to be careful I don’t burn out. It’s really difficult to sleep when my head is buzzing with so many ideas. Right. I’m going to search the patent records for cisterns now to see if anyone’s already come up with my idea.

Had a look through Esp@ce and couldn’t see anything relevant, so just plonking my patent spec together. I hope the patent office don’t mind that it doesn’t look pretty.

Enviro Entrepreneur Summer School – Keele University.

God, that was good. As a direct result of attending this event (funded by Keele University, UrbanMines, Mustard, Advantage West Midlands & Business Link), since I got home on friday night, I’ve put in one patent application and one trademark application, and I’m just working on my second patent application!

Just spoken to Michelle Brand about possible designs for gob-let, funding enviro-entrepreneurs and working for delayed invoices.

So, it’s 1.30 on my first bogblog day and I’ve run out of energy. I got the patent application done and I’m trusting my flatmate to post it for me. I’ve also had a look at some business cards on vista print with the new company name 500 year vision. Don’t know whether to order them now, or wait till Mike’s drawn me a nice version of the logo to go on them too. Think I’ll write a spec to commission the separate internal and external elements of bog when I come back to work this afternoon.

It’s 7.30 pm. I’ve spent the afternoon getting in contact with people. I’ve put together a spec for the reed bed green roof and sent this over to the Manufacturing Advisory Service so they can check it looks sound.

By 9pm Mike’s got bogblog up and running and I’m going to put in my first post now!
